Spring temperatures offer the perfect opportunity to take care of any necessary maintenance as the season gets warmer and warmer. You may be thinking about energy-saving while using your HVAC air conditioning unit. In this article we offer insight and tips on saving money as the season warms leading up to summer weather.

Replacing Air Filters: During spring time it will be important to regularly check and clean, and change out your air filters. Filters over time can get clogged with pollen, dust, and other debris. This can decrease air quality and airflow, causing your HVAC unit to run longer than needed. When your unit runs constantly trying to cool spaces it increases your energy use which then increases the cost of your utility bill.
Clean Air Vents and Registers: Like air filters, air vents and registers can become clogged with dust and debris. You could also have things like furniture, toys, etc. around air vents causing air flow to be blocked. When air flow is blocked it can slow the speed of cooling within your home. This causes your HVAC unit to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. While clearing air vents/registers might seem like a simple fix this can actually reduce energy costs.
Check Ductwork & Ventilation: Have your local registered HVAC technician inspect your ductwork and ventilation. They can check for any leaks or blockages preventing proper airflow through your space. Some blockages could even be caused by critters like squirrels or mice. Your technician can actually clean out your ventilation system, which is typically recommended to do every 3-5 years. If you haven’t had this done in a while it might be time for a cleaning. This allows for less energy to be wasted saving on energy costs and will increase air quality.
Inspect & Clean Your Outdoor Unit: If you haven’t already cleaned and had your unit inspected in preparation for the spring season, this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Cleaning the outside of your unit and checking that everything is working can increase energy efficiency. This will help maintain proper airflow throughout your home, and reduce energy usage. We also recommend carefully trimming any vegetation around your unit to prevent damage, especially in the event of a storm.
Schedule Professional Maintenance: Make sure that you are having any necessary maintenance done this spring as the temperature gets warmer. This is especially important to do before summer. Your HVAC professional should be licensed and registered to perform any maintenance on your HVAC unit. Check your warranty for any scheduled maintenance that needs to be done as well.
